Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum - Stephen F Udvar-Hazy Center (Chantilly, USA)

The Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly is part of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Its exhibits can be viewed from three levels–the floor and two levels of elevated “skywalks.” Also known as “America’s Hangar,” it contains thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including dozens of full-sized aircraft. Among the best-known of these are the Enola Gay (the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in 1945), a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, and an Air France Concorde. The attached James S. McDonnell Space Hangar houses the Space Shuttle Enterprise and other spacecraft, rockets, satellites, and assorted Space Age artifacts. In addition, the Donald D. Engen Observation Tower provides exhibits on the history of air traffic control and offers a viewing platform for visitors to watch air traffic approaching and departing from nearby Dulles International Airport. Admission to the Udvar-Hazy Center and docent-guided tours are free, but fees are charged for parking and for programs in the onsite IMAX theater. A shuttle service between the Center and the Air and Space Museum on National Mall in Washington, DC is also available.
