Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) are designated by Natural England. There are 36 in all, selected to conserve and enhance their natural beauty, not just landscape features but also flora and fauna and human history. The Solway Coast AONB was created in 1964 and stretches along the Cumbria coast of the Solway Firth from Rockcliffe to Maryport. It is characterised by its intertidal mud flats, salt marshes and raised beaches created by silt deposits. Of special interest are the salt pans and “raised mires”, domes of peat covered in pools and plantlife. The area is low and windswept and conveys a sense of wildness and remoteness. Because of the rich feeding grounds it is a designated nature reserve especially for wildfowl which overwinter here. The area is also rich in history, being on the Scottish border and next to the sea. The west end of Hadrian’s Wall runs into the sea at Bowness-on-Solway and Hadrian’s Wall Path runs along the northern part of the AONB. There is a Discovery Centre in Silloth which has information about the area in the form of leaflets, a film and a timescale exhibition explaining how the area came to be what we see today. The Centre is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm.
