St Augustine's Abbey (Canterbury, United Kingdom)

St Augustine’s Abbey is located just east of Canterbury Cathedral and is jointly listed with the Cathedral and St Martins Church as an UNESCO heritage site. Founded in AD 597 by St Augustine as part of the first Roman Catholic mission to England, the Abbey was originally a cemetary for the Archbishops of Canterbury and the Kings of Kent. It was partially dismantled in the mid 16th-century and a palace was constructed at the site for Henry VIII. The premises also suffered further damage due to a storm in 1703. The Abbey and museum are open all year and details of the opening times are available at the website.
