St Stephens Green (Dublin, Ireland)

St. Stephen’s Green (‘Faiche Stiabhna’ in Irish Gaelic) is a 22-acre urban park in Dublin’s city center. Over time, it has evolved from a marshy common on the edge of medieval Dublin into a Victorian public park that includes an ornamental lake and waterfall, 3.5 km in paths, attractive shelters against unpleasant weather, a children’s playground, memorials to various Irish notables and tree, shrub, and flower plantings. St. Stephen’s in its present form was established in 1880, with little subsequent change to its overall design. The modern St. Stephen’s Green is a refuge for city residents of all sorts—office workers, students, mothers with children—as well as a destination in itself for tourists. Free lunchtime concerts are offered through the summer months. The park is surrounded by the businesses and residences of a prosperous neighborhood, including the St. Stephens Green Shopping Centre, which is fitted out in faux Victorian style that makes it a period complement to its famous neighbor.
