Sv. Uspenie Bogorodichno Church (Varna, Bulgaria)
Sv. Uspenie Bogorodichno (Holy Assumption) Church is considered to be the most impressive monument of the sea capital of Bulgaria. It is located in the heart of Varna, close to the main square Nezavisimost. The church officially opened to the public on August 30, 1886 and at that time it was the largest church in Bulgaria. The building was constructed utilizing recycled ashlars from an old destroyed fortress wall. It features modern Byzantine architecture with a spacious interior, wood carved iconostasis and stained glass. The church underwent several renovations and restorations. One of the major renovations was that of the domes, which was completed in 2002. The entire roof structure was enriched with very thin plates of gold and silver. At that time the building was fitted a modern ventilation system and the precious murals were restored. Daily liturgical prayer has been a vital part of the church’s worship since the church’s official opening in 1886. During the liturgical prayer visitors may enjoy the chants performed by the oldest temple choir in Varna.
