Sveta Sofia (Sofia, Bulgaria)

Sveta Sofia (St. Sophia) Church is located in the center of the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, next to the cathedral Alexander Nevsky. The basis of the building have served the foundations of several ancient churches, most of which are from the middle of 4th century. The church suffered from the invasion of other tribes, but under the reign of Emperor Justinian the Great it was turned into a basilica. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom the church became a Metropolitan Cathedral Church, after that during the Ottoman period it was a mosque but an earthquake in the middle of the 15th century fully destroyed it. After more than a century the church was again restored as a mosque. In the 19th century it was destroyed again by earthquakes, but remnants of it were used as storage until the Liberation. Recovery as it is now started in the begging of 1930 and in 1955 it was declared as a cultural monument of world importance. The current building is in Byzantine architecture style and is a cross basilica without a belfry and with three altars. The bell hangs on a tree in the yard. Now Sveta Sofia is an active Orthodox church. Working hours: every day winter 10 - 6 PM, summer 10-5 PM.
