Tampere Cathedral (Tampere, Finland)

Tampere cathedral, built between 1902 and 1907, is located right at the heart of Tampere. The church is designed by architect Lars Sonck and it was previously known as Johannes church. The speciality of the church are the frescos inside, which are made by very famous Finnish artist Hugo Simberg. Perhaps the most famous art work in the church is Simbergs “Wounded Angel”, a bigger version of the painting held at Ateneum museum in Helsinki. Besides ceremoniums, there are many kinds of activities held in cathedral; concerts and choir performances for example. Tampere cathedral is regarded as one of the main monuments of Finnish national romantic architechture and the original ground plan was elected to be shown at an exhibition presenting the 20th century architechture at Galeries nationales du Grand Palais in Paris in year 2000.
