The Citadel (Carlisle, United Kingdom)
The Citadel in Carlisle dates back to the 16th century although its two main oval towers, known as the East Tower and the West Tower were not added until 1810-11. At the southern end of the complex was Botcher Gate, which was the original gate into the city of Carlisle. Botcher Gate was later replaced by a fortress. The Citadel was once used as a prison but in more recent times it housed the city’s courts with the civil courts occupying the East Tower and the criminal courts occupying the West Tower. Since the relocation of the courts the building has been restored and the West Tower can now be visited by the general public who can visit the original court rooms, guided tours are also available. Details of current opening times and further information regarding visiting can be obtained from the Council building nearby or by telephoning +44 (1228) 606336.
