The Lanes (Brighton, United Kingdom)

The Lanes in Brighton refer to an area of the old part of the town that is characterised by narrow streets and alleyways. This area extends from North Street in the north, Bartholomew Square and Prince Albert Street in the south, Ship Street in the west and Market Street and East Street in the east. The Lanes contain many small boutique shops, cafes and restaurants and the area is especially well known for its antique shops. The majority of the buildings in this area date from 1792 but they stand on the site of the original settlement in the area, which pre-dates this by about a thousand years. Most of the buildings are centred around the main street, which is known as Meeting House Lane. The only part of the Lanes that does not date from this period is Duke Street, which was built in the 1980’s.
