The Masters (Augusta, USA)
The Masters Championship in Augusta is one of the four so-called “Majors” in men’s professional golf. Unlike the other three which change venue every year, it is always played on the Augusta National Course and is the first of the year’s Majors, taking place in April. The current holder is Phil Mickelson and past winners include all the great names of golf: Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Tiger Woods. Traditionally the winner is presented with a green jacket. The championship has been held since 1934, adopting the title “Masters” in 1939. The course itself was also built in the early 1930s, designed by Bobby Jones. It is a parkland course and provides a real test for the competitors, with water features and difficult combinations of holes such as the 11th, 12th and 13th known as Amen Corner. For those able to look away from the golf, the trees on Magnolia Avenue leading to the clubhouse are usually in full bloom and the course is renowned for its rhododendrons and azaleas.
