The Mission San Juan Capistrano (San Juan Capistrano, USA)
The Mission San Juan Capistrano stands in the town of San Juan Capistrano, Orange County. It was founded in 1776 by Spanish missionaries and was named after a fourteenth century Italian theologian, St. John of Capistrano. It was one of a chain of Missions built along the spine of California as self sufficient communities for missionaries and native Indians. The Great Stone Church was begun in 1796 but was destroyed in an earthquake of 1812. Within the grounds are gardens and fountains, the old cloisters and adobe walls and exhibits have been laid out in the Chapel, Soldiers Barracks and Padres Quarters. The Church has been partly restored and the original bells have been re-hung. The volunteers of the Mission arrange guided tours (in Spanish and English). There is also a book and souvenir shop. Opening hours: Daily 8:30 am - 5:00 pm Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas & Good Friday afternoon. The Mission closes at noon on Christmas Eve.
