Accommodations in Tunbridge Wells near The Pantiles (Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom)
The Pantiles (Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom)
The Pantiles is situated close to the spring which brought fame to Tunbridge Wells as a spa town in the 17th century and reached its heyday in the 18th century Georgian era. The colonnaded walkway was originally known as the Walks, divided into the Upper Walk for gentry, and the Lower Walk for commoners. The name Pantiles derives from an s-shaped tile used uniquely here as paving, although more commonly used for roofing. They were replaced by stone slabs at the end of the 18th century, but the name Pantiles was reintroduced in 1887. Most of the buildings are original, although renovated, and the area is listed and so subject to specific planning requirements. Today the Pantiles area remains a vibrant commercial area, with small specialist shops, especially antique shops, restaurants and bars. The spring still flows and in summer its waters are dispensed by a costumed “dipper”.
