Thomas Jefferson Memorial (Washington D.C., USA)
The Jefferson Memorial honors Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia statute on religious freedom, founder of the University of Virginia, and third president of the United States. The structure was designed by John Russell Pope, who was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and by the Rotunda at the University of Virginia, designed by Jefferson himself. Construction was completed in 1943. With the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Capitol, the Jefferson Memorial is one of the four key ‘points’ bounding the National Mall. The white marble ‘temple’ consists of a circle of Ionic columns supporting a domed roof and fronted with a classical portico. Under the dome stands a 19-ft bronze statue of Jefferson. Four interior panels contain quotes reflecting his political philosophy. A fifth quote inscribed around the base of the dome was taken from a letter written by Jefferson in 1800: ‘For I have sworn on the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.’ The memorial is open 24 hours per day, though rangers and facilities are available only during daytime hours. Admission is free.
