Toompea Castle (Tallinn, Estonia)

Toompea Castle (Toompea Loss) is situated on a steep limestone hill in the centre of Tallinn, about 50 meters above the sea level. It was built between the 13th and 14th centuries. Since Toompea Castle was bought by Livonian Order in the second half of 14th century, it was reconstructed. Three new towers were erected on the new wall, among which were “Pikk Hermann”, “Stur den Kerl” and “Pilsticker”. The territory of the castle was separated by a deep ditch and a defensive yard supplemented this fortification. In 15th century another wall was built parallel to the main one as well as the round tower “Landskrone”. When the town was conquered by Russia in the Great Northern War in the 18th century, it was decided to build a new palace. The western wall with the tower “Stue den Kurl” and some buildings were demolished, but the ditch was filled up. Nowadays, the Parliament of Estonia (Riigikogu) is situated here, and it is possible to have a tour, that lasts for about 30 minutes. Tours are organized in Estonian, English and Russian and require a photo ID. It is also possible to visit Riigikogu alone. The further information is available on the web site of Riigikogu.
