The Topkapi Palace was built by orders of Sultan Fatih Mehmet “The Conqueror” and finished in 1478. It served as residence to the Ottoman Sultans and was the centre of the administration. The Palace, which covered an area of 700.000 sq metres then, is surrounded by a 5 km long wall. The remaining 80.000 sq metres that are still existing consist of two main sections which are divided into living quarters and administration and educational buildings. Visitors to the Topkapi Museum, which includes the Treasury of the Ottoman Emperors, weapons, kitchen quarters, library, audience chambers and much more, will be able to obtain their entrance tickets at the main gate. If you also want to see the harem (women’s quarters) you will have to buy a separate ticket at the entrance to the harem inside the palace. Admission fees to each of the sections, harem and museum, are 10 YTL each. There are several restaurants and kiosks within the museum. Opening hours: Wednesday to Monday 09.00 - 19.00 Closed on Tuesdays and the first days of religious festivals. Public transport : Tramway Sultanahmet
