Toronto Zoo (Toronto, Canada)

Toronto Zoo is located near the Rouge River in the Scarborough district of the city and first opened its doors to the public on the 15th August 1974. It was originally called the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo. The zoo covers an area of 710 acres (287 hectares) and provides a home for over 5,000 animals from over 500 different species. It is arranged in seven geographical regions (Indo-Malaya, Canadian Domain, Africa, Eurasia, Americas, Australasia and the Tundra Trek), with each area featuring representative animals from that region. Animals that can be found here include giraffes, elephants, tigers, birds and primates. Toronto Zoo runs a conservation program and helps to return many endangered species back to their wild habitat. It has also provided a refuge for many injured wild animals like polar bears. There are over 10 kilometres of walking trials and also 4 amusement rides including a carousel. Facilities include toilets (equipped for disabled people and with baby changing facilities), a café, restaurant and a gift shop. It is open daily from 9.30 am until 4.30pm. Details of admission charges can be found on the website.
