Tower of Hercules (A Coruña, Spain)

Der Turm ist der älteste noch funktionstüchtige römische Leuchtturm der Welt. Der Turm stammt aus dem 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. und wurde 1788 auf Anordnung von König Carlos IV. renoviert. Der Turm ist 68m hoch und sein Licht ist über dem Meer bis zu 32 Meilen weit zu sehen. Vom Leuchtturm aus hat man eine gute Aussicht über die Region, dafür müssen jedoch 242 Stufen erklommen werden. Die Mythologie besagt, dass der Turm aus dem Felsen steht, an dem Herkules mit dem Riesen Geryon drei Tage lang kämpfte. Herkules gewann und aus Dankbarkeit wurde ihm dieser Turm gebaut.
