The Tree Lighting Ceremony at Rockefeller Center is an annually held event that takes place in late November or early December. The event is so popular that it is broadcast via TV and a number of celebrities are always attending the ceremony. The trees, which have been put up since 1931, are normally Norwegian Spruces and in between 70ft (23m) and 90ft (27m) tall. Once standing, the tree is decorated with 78.000 Christmas lights which come on 8km (5 miles) of electrical wire, while the Swarovski star that tops the tree weighs a stately 550 pound (249.5kg). The ceremony is underlined by performances of international music stars and dance performances on the ice rink. Guest in the past include Celine Dion, Barry Manilow, Carrie Underwood and many more.
