At 14.5 kilometres in length, Ullswater is the second largest of the lakes in the Lake District. Formed by glacial actiity at the end of the last ice age, it is compared with Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. Although there are only small centres of population around the lake (Glenridding, Pooley Bridge, Watermillock and Patterdale) it has become the centre for many large hotels, resorts and farm houses. The nearest town is Penrith. The lake offers many water based activities whilst the surrounding hills and fells provide an environment for horse-riding, climbing and hiking. It is also a popular area for less active poursuits including sight-seeing, walking and painting. The lake is managed by the Lake District National Park Authority who also maintains an information centre at Glenridding.
Ullswater is a top attraction in Glenridding, known for its unique features that attract numerous visitors each year.
