The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is located next to the National Mall in Washington, DC. It is a public-private undertaking dedicated to honoring the victims of the Nazi Holocaust through an institution that undertakes a program of educational outreach, historical documentation, and applied multidisciplinary research on issues related to the history of the Holocaust itself and the broader practice of genocide. The Hall of Remembrance, an octagonal chamber dominated by an eternal flame and small candles that can be lighted by visitors, is the museum’s (and the United States’) official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. The Permanent Exhibit consists of four theaters showing documentary footage, numerous small video monitors, and hundreds of artifacts from the Holocaust era. On entering the Permanent Exhibit, visitors are issued an ID card of an actual victim, detailing the progression he or she followed toward either death or survival. Admission to the museum is free–however, during spring and summer, the number of visitors is controlled by means of time-stamped tickets.
United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a top attraction in Washington D.C., known for its unique features that attract numerous visitors each year.
