The headquarters for the United States Institute of Peace in Washington is located along Constitution Avenue across from the Lincoln Memorial. The Institute is also next to the District entrance to the Roosevelt Bridge and has a view over the Potomac River and toward the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The 5-story complex was designed by the Moshe Safdie architecture firm and consists of three adjacent and connected glass and steel buildings sheltered under a white glass roof that resembles an oversized dove of peace. Interior atriums lead to a museum, learning center, administrative offices, research center, and conference facility. The Institute was established by Congress in 1984 and is tasked with finding peaceful means for preventing and resolving international conflict–thereby enhancing national security through peace. The headquarters complex in its current location was completed in 2011.
