Washington National Cathedral (Washington D.C., USA)

Washington National Cathedral is an Episcopal Church built in a European traditional style to serve the needs of an American religious community. Located in Washington, DC, it is the city’s tallest building. It was established by a Federal charter granted to the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation of the District of Columbia for a “church for national purposes”- a bit of a stretch given the U.S. tradition of separation of church and state. The cornerstone was laid in 1907, with the first service held in 1912. The cathedral is largely Gothic in design, with adaptations to give it a universal character. It uses stone from Canterbury Cathedral for the pulpit, stone from Glastonbury Abbey for the bishop’s seat, and stone from Solomon’s quarry and Mount Sinai for the high altar. The sainted-glass Space Window even contains a rock from the moon. Stone carvings throughout incorporate many New World motifs–such as the American bison and alligators. The 50 state flags hang in the nave, and prominent Americans are depicted in statues and stained-glass windows. The cathedral is often used for State occasions and is a focus for interfaith worship.
