Ever since additions have been made to the zoo. In 2002 a ravaging flood due to the rise of the River Vltava devastated half of the zoo. Over 1000 animals were moved and 134 did not survive. Following that flood 20 buildings were demolished and 13 others seriously damaged. A fund raising campaign was launched to find the 8 million Euro’s necessary for its rehabilitation. The zoo nowadays shelters 4,500 animals over 60 hectares of land and receives over a million visitors a year.
