About Huascarán National Park

This Park covers about 3000 square kilometres and lies in the Cordillera Blanca. It contains 663 glaciers and 296 lakes and was established in 1975 to safeguard flora and fauna, geological formations and archaeological remains.

The mountains of the Park range from 2000 to over 6000 m in height and Huascarán, the mountain from which the park takes its name, is the highest snow-covered mountain in Peru at 6768 m.

The fauna of the park includes among others, the Cougar, the Jaguar, the Llama, the Guanaco, the Marsh Deer, the Peruvian Tapir, the Peruvian Piedtail, and 112 species of birds. The flora includes over 779 species of high Andean plants like the Puya raimondi.

It is possible to practice ecotourism, horse riding, skiing and guided archaeological excursions in the park.

The Park has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site from 1985.
