About Tarn Hows

Tarn Hows is a guest house set in a slate, Victorian residence in the heart of the Lake District.

Every room has either an en-suite or a separate, private bathroom, each features individually-controlled heating, flat-screen TV, complimentary toiletries and a hospitality tray and many enjoy countryside views.

Tarn Hows boasts private parking, free Wi-Fi, a computer for guest use, a small library of walking guides, books and maps and a drying room.

Continental and freshly-cooked full English breakfasts are served in the dining room and, in Keswick Town Centre nearby, there are numerous restaurants from Italian and Indian to Tapas and traditional English pubs, for evening meals.

Derwentwater and Borrowdale Valley are less than ten-minutes away by car and there are many places in the vicinity where guests can walk, climb, paraglide, pony trek or mountain bike.

Positive Reviews

A friendly, relaxed welcome.

Previous guests are most complimentary about the welcome they've received on arrival at Tarn Hows; the hosts are warm, friendly and helpful, yet unobtrusive, and will be happy to give advice on walks, weather and the best places to eat.

Fresh, filling breakfasts.

You can start your day off well with the breakfasts at the guest house. Full English breakfast is cooked to order, and guests can help themselves to continental options from the side table in the dining room. Portions are generous and everything is well-cooked.

A home away from home.

Despite its location just five-minutes from Keswick Town Centre, the guest house is quiet at night. Tarn Hows itself, is, according to previous guests, immaculately clean, beautifully decorated and homely. A recent refurbishment programme has refreshed guest rooms and new luxury touches, such as quality bed linen and soft towels, are obvious.

Negative Reviews

Boots off at the door.

The owners are they, themselves, avid walkers, however, due to recently changed carpets, there is a policy which, understandably perhaps, excludes muddy boots from the house, and these must be changed at the front door. Perhaps pack your slippers if you're planning a muddy hike during your stay.

A little too quiet, perhaps.

For some guests, the peace and quiet in the guest house sometimes goes too far. For example; one or two single travellers have suggested that light background noise in the dining room at breakfast would be nice, as they find the silence quite awkward.

Not all rooms have en-suites.

Most rooms are en-suite, however, several have private bathrooms down separate stairways or along the hallway. Robes can be supplied, but this set-up may not be suitable for everyone.
