About The County Hotel

One of only two significant buildings to survive the 1931 earthquake, The County Hotel is a veritable institution in Napier. Its classical art-deco style and traditional bar and restaurant evoke the opulent feel of the early twentieth century.

The 18 luxurious rooms and decadent Regal Suite enhance this hotel's old-world charm. They do, however, integrate modern creature comforts such as SKY TV, DVD players and mobile phones for guests' use. Some also feature spa baths and balconies.

The County Hotel provides parking and complimentary Wi-Fi, whilst guests can relax with a book and a glass of port in the hotel's library.

The Wine Street Restaurant offers high tea in the afternoon and the finest regional cuisine and wines for lunch and dinner. Guests can also soak up the atmosphere with a drink in Churchill's Champagne & Snug Bar.

Marine Parade, the MTG Hawke's Bay museum, theatre and art gallery, as well as the Pania of the Reef statue are within a five-minute walk.

Positive Reviews

Step back in time in this historic hotel

Guests fall in love with the oldy world atmosphere of this stunningly refurbished, classical-boutique hotel. Complementing perfectly Napier's famous art-deco heritage, it exudes opulence and character thanks to its period features and antiques scattered around. Lounging around in the restaurant and bar with a drink or a meal also helps guests soak up the ambience – however, the highlight for many is the unique experience of sipping a free glass of port in the library.

Wonderful staff add to the overall experience

The guests love the delightful nature of the hotel's personnel as well as its owner. They go way beyond their roles to make guests feel like they are welcome and part of a unique experience. Reception staff not only show guests to their rooms, but give guided tours of the building and recount its unique history.

Convenient central location

This hotel is situated in the heart of historic Napier with easy access to the town and waterfront. Guests say there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants in the vicinity.

Negative Reviews

Inadequate bathroom doors

Guests are not convinced by the use of sliding louvred-type doors between the bedroom and bathroom. They are not very solid and offer little privacy.

Sound-proofing issues

Guests point out that the noise insulation in this old building isn't great. This isn't helped when there are functions or parties in the hotel or loud music is playing in the bar.
