Tropical Island Apartahotel is a great-value base to explore Santa Domingo. Located in the quiet suburb of Coral del Surs, the complex is 25 minutes from some of the Dominican Republic's finest beaches.

The 34 air-conditioned studios and one or two-bedroom self-catering apartments are beautifully furnished and decorated. Each has at least one private bathroom and free Wi-Fi. The fully-equipped kitchenette includes a large refrigerator and microwave.

Tropical Island Aparthotel offers free parking and a 24-hour front desk, which can organize airport transfers.

Breakfast is available for a supplement and there is a small store to stock up on provisions. There are also many shops and restaurants close by.

The hotel is just seven kilometers from the center of Santa Domingo. Guests can discover the Colonial Zone - a UNESCO World Heritage site - and the Calle de Las Damas – the first street in the new world.

The hotel feels safe

Santa Domingo is the largest city in the Caribbean and the neighborhood is pretty poor. This can be scary for some guests. Security is therefore high on their list of priorities. Guests do feel safe in the hotel though and say that the security is excellent.

Super staff

Guests are made to feel at home by the friendly staff. Some claim to feel like they are treated like family or even royalty! The management seem to be particularly helpful. They will help you out with any difficulties - including negotiating taxis. This is especially useful if you don't speak a word of Spanish.

Good location

The hotel is in a fine location, not far from the center of Santa Domingo. There are malls and supermarkets nearby whilst the highway helps you get to other parts of the island quickly. Guests like being close to the town yet benefiting from the Tropical Island's affordability.

Negative Reviews

Site under construction

According to many guests, the hotel is still under construction! You can hear the noise of the building work from early morning. The hotel suffers also from frequent losses of electricity.

Air-con

Guests are not happy to find that air-conditioning costs extra. And not only that, you can only use it at night! In the daytime you have to try and cool down by using the ceiling fan!

What sea view?

Some guests feel misled by some of the hotel's descriptions. Some have been promised sea views - which is pretty optimistic as the hotel is nowhere near the beach! At best, you might catch a glimpse of the sea in the horizon that's all!
