Positive Reviews

Very friendly helpful staff.

Many guests felt the friendly and helpful attitude of the staff set this hostel apart from similar establishments they had stayed in previously. The check-in staff were noted to be particularly welcome.

Basic hostel in a convenient location.

Most guests at The Russell Scott Hostel found the proximity to shops convenient and the ease of access proximity to the stop tram and bus stops made getting around Sheffield pleasant and easy.

Free beverages were appreciated.

The access to free tea and coffee was very much appreciated by the majority of guests staying in here and the self-catering facilities were also praised by those on a budget or not wishing to dine out.

Negative Reviews

Cleanliness can be hit and miss.

It is possible that the cleanliness can vary according to the housekeeping staff on duty. There have been very mixed reports on the standards of hygiene with some guests saying the bathroom and kitchen areas were spotless. However an equal number have been unhappy and said they would not stay again because of the dirty conditions.

Noise makes sleep difficult.

The levels of noise at night made sleep difficult if not impossible for some guests. The walls are said to be paper thin and a room close to the toilet facilities will mean the door opening and closing and the sound of flushing may keep you awake.

Showers were temperamental.

Although the hostel website boasts “plenty of hot water” some guests were only able to have a lukewarm shower and the hot water took a long time to come through on other occasions.
