About Southend-on-Sea Carnival

The Southend-on-Sea Carnival is a one week spectacle that is held every year in August. The carnival in Southend was first celebrated in 1906, back then it was part of the regatta the city holds every year and consisted mainly of a procession of horse-drawn floats.
Since 1923 it has its own date and since 1930 it has been a full week of events, with the exception of the wartime years when it was cancelled.
During the week a fun-fair is held in Chalkwell Park where visitors of all ages can enjoy rides, fun-fair games, refreshments and snacks and competitions.
The carnival culminates in the traditional illuminated parade which is regarded as the highlight of the event.
The torchlight parade of floats, local groups and marching bands starts from Chalkwell Esplanade, travels along the Western Esplande and finally ends with a fireworks display in front of Southend's pier .
