About South Parade Pier

South Parade Pier is located on South Parade, Southsea and dates from 1875. As well as hosting live events, the pier has an angling platform. An art and craft market is held frequently in the covered walkway, and concerts and sporting events are held in the outdoor area in summer. There are kiosks and a cafeteria on the premises.

The pier has 3 venues, namely the Gaiety Showbar, the Arcade and the Albert Tavern. It is possible to hire either the Gaiety or the Albert for private functions. The Gaiety can accommodate up to 800 people and the Albert up to 400. Licensing hours are from 10am to 2am Monday to Saturday (close at 3am) and from 12 noon to 12.30am on Sundays.

The original pier was destroyed by fire in 1904 and had to be rebuilt. Portsmouth Corporation bought the pier in 1906. The pier had first been designed as a landing jetty, but the second structure was intended to be a pleasure pier for holidaymakers. During World War II the pier was used as a depot. A fire in 1967 and another in 1974 caused considerable damage, and the pier had to be rebuilt on both occasions.
