Built between 2900BC and 2600BC the standing stones at Callanish contain 13 large stones arranged in a circle with a line of smaller stones leading from this circle in a north, south, east and west orientation. The exact origins of these stones are not clear but it is known that they align with the movements of the moon.
There is a car parking area and visitor centre. The visitor centre is open daily (except Sunday) from 10am until 6pm. Access to the stones is free.
These stones are usually referred as Callanish 1 to distinguish them for two other nearby stone circles (Callanish 11 and Callanish 111).
