About Surfside Backpackers

Set in an incredible location just steps from iconic Bondi Beach, Surfside Backpackers offers a traditional backpacker atmosphere. It can also arrange beginners lesson for budding surfers.

Dorms, doubles and family rooms are available. Bathrooms are shared and linen is included.

The hostel has a fantastic open terrace where guests can look out for whales or perhaps feed one of the tame lorikeets. There’s also a lounge with big screen TV. Guests can use watersports equipment ranging from surfboards to fishing rods.

Like most backpackers, this one has a cosy communal kitchen where guests can prepare their own meals; but Bondi has some of the city’s best dining and drinking spots that should really not be missed.

Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte Beaches are all within walking distance of Surfside Backpackers. Those looking for a break from the beach can head to that other Sydney icon, the Opera House. It is easily reached by means of public transport and is six miles away.

Positive Reviews

Very welcoming staff and atmosphere

Guests really liked the atmosphere at the hostel. They reported that it had a traditional backpacker’s vibe, where the staff were friendly and relatively laid back and it was very easy to meet other travellers and socialise.

Terrific location in Bondi

The backpacker’s is just a couple of blocks from the famous beach. Guests felt privileged to be in such a central spot and reported that it was easy to just stroll down to the beach. They also liked being so close to the dining, drinking and other hotspots in the enclave. They never felt they had to travel far to have a good time.

Free equipment rentals

Guests were very happy to discover that the backpacker’s could supply quite a wide range of watersport equipment to them free of charge. Of course guests can’t usually travel with their own surfboards and the like, so were grateful that there were boards and other equipment available for use.

Negative Reviews

No or limited free Wi-Fi

This was perhaps what most irritated guests staying at the backpacker’s. They mentioned that, depending on their package, they either received no free Wi-Fi at all or else a very limited amount – such as one hour a day. Considering the necessity of constant connectivity to modern lifestyles, guests felt that Wi-Fi should have been included.

Disappointing free breakfast

Guests weren’t very impressed with the free breakfast available at the hostel. They described it as being just cereal and maybe a hot drink, with many saying it wasn’t really worth the bother.

Questionable standards of cleanliness

Guests were generally not happy with the standards of cleanliness applied at the hostel. The floors came in for the most criticism, with guests saying they were dirty and often had cockroaches scurrying across them.
