Orrest Cottage is a bed and breakfast set in a 19th Century cottage in the village of Windermere, a short distance from the lake it is named after.

Refurbished rooms offer flat-screen TV, tea and coffee facilities with home-baked flapjacks on arrival. The loft suite has its own private lounge, two bathrooms and a coffee machine.

Parking is available nearby, Wi-Fi is free and hosts are happy to store bikes and advise of cycle and hiking routes nearby, as well as more adventurous activities.

Orrest Cottage has won awards for its breakfasts; offering a huge menu of everything from American-inspired waffles, bagels to sweet french toast specials and the essential, hearty Cumbrian breakfast. Ingredients are sourced locally and eggs come from the guesthouse's own hens.

The bed and breakfast is a four-minute walk from all the restaurants, shops and train station in Windermere and a 20-minute walk from Orrest Head.

Award-winning breakfasts.

If you stayed for a week you could opt for something different, and equally as tempting, from the menu everyday. Guests love the waffles with bacon and maple syrup, the sausage stack and traditional Cumbrian breakfast. Bread is home-baked, eggs are from the B&B's own hens, and everything else is locally-sourced.

With well-kept rooms, a modern interior with quirky touches and comfortable beds, most guests find that Orrest Cottage offers everything they could wish for in a bed and breakfast. Hosts are friendly and offer early check-ins (as early as 11am) on request too.

Peaceful location close to everything.

A few minutes walk from the centre of Windermere Village, a short drive from the Lake and within easy reach of hikes, bike rides and 4X4 expeditions, the location is ideal for those looking to enjoy a peaceful, or more adventurous, break in Cumbria. There are numerous local pubs and highly regarded restaurants in the area too.

Negative Reviews

Not for the tall in stature.

If you're fairly tall you might want to avoid the loft room; with low beams and sloping ceilings, you may find yourself ducking while walking around your accommodation. The shower room is also, apparently, quite compact.

Some noise disturbance.

The bed and breakfast enjoys a central location but, because of this, you may experience some level of noise disturbance from passing traffic or late-night revellers returning home from the local pub. Most, however, don't find it an issue.

Not the biggest beds.

For those used to queen sized beds, the standard doubles in some rooms might make sleeping arrangements a little cosy. The majority of guests, however, find the beds exceptionally comfortable and enjoy a good nights sleep at Orrest Cottage.
